Melanie Laking

Associate | Social Worker

Melanie (she/her) is Ojibwe with European ancestry and a member of Shawanaga First Nation. Melanie holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Toronto and an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree where she specialized in Indigenous Studies. She is a registered Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, and a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers.

Melanie’s therapeutic approach is grounded in an Indigenous worldview that is wholistic, strength based, and trauma informed. She aims to foster a warm, collaborative space where clients can explore what it means to live mino bimaadiziwin (a good life). Melanie practices Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and also draws from her training in trauma therapy, motivational interviewing and mindfulness-based practices. Through these therapeutic orientations, Melanie supports her clients to take intentional steps towards positive change guided by their own personal values and goals. Melanie specializes in working with adults experiencing intergenerational trauma, life transitions, perfectionism, anxiety, perinatal mental health challenges, transitions to parenthood, and those impacted by a loved one’s addiction.
